statement of intent

In my work, I intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate in representation, audience, industry, and language. I am planning to use a traditional 80s indie rock look from the 80s/90s magazines, using dull and black colors. My model is going to be wearing the stereotypical clothes that indie rock bands wear e.g., shorts, vest tops, flannels. This will be targeted towards a young audience between the ages of 16-25 that listen to indie rock music, my magazine will target them because the model will be young showing them a new artist with the front cover being indie rock theme. The model will be doing stereotypical poses and wearing stereotypical clothing, showing the theme well. The concept values will be about supporting new artists to promote their music starting there Carrer off. The model I am using will use stereotypical posses to create the meaning of the indie rock music, the camerawork will be lower/head on shots showing a fun but serious look; by doing this it will show the targeted audience the genre they are looking for because of how the pictures will be taken and the angle they are taken at.

In my website I intend to link my media products to demonstrate my knowledge and understanding of the digitally convergent of my media production by keeping the color scheme similar to my magazine to show that they are made and produced by the same company, my website will include a video montage from festivals and concerts to show what it is like to go to one. The website will also have a section where you can buy the new and older released magazines as well as merch, all of this will attract the targeted audience because it will show the genre of music they listen to and if they have seen the magazine they will want to view the website to see if there is anything more. The pages on the website will be merchandise they can buy, previous magazines they can view and buy, concert tickets they can buy for the music artist. I will be using social media platforms such as Instagram to promote the website and products. The visual elements will keep the audience hooked through the colors used and the video montage that i will put together, the pictures from the photoshoot with the same model e.c.t.

Research conclusion

Thursday 23rd may 2024.

Product 1 magazine:

main concept/idea-
The main concept/ idea for my magazine is a rock band e.g. Kate bush.

what genre and how will fit into?-
Indie rock artists are usually in groups of 4-6 members or a singular artist iam going to have two different artists on my magazine covers one male and one female, i will then be following the sterotypical indie rock outfits by having dark or dim colours for the clothing

How will this concept attract the specific audience?-
People that normally listen to indie rock range from 16-40 this is because of the genre of music being around for so long people still enjoy listening to it, but my magazine will be aimed towards the ages between 16-25 this is because the people on the front cover are new and young singers meaning some from the older generation wont have any intrest of listening to them.

concept values?-
My magazine concept values will be about helping new/young artists promote there music through my magazine, it will be to help them start off and find listeners/fans for there music.

How to use technical codes/ mise-en-scene representations?-
When iam taking the photos for the front cover for the magazine i will want to make sure that the lighting is dim and make sure the clothing they wear are the stereotypical clothing for rock bands. i would also want them to be able to tell who the main singer of the group is and by doing this i will make sure that they are standing more fowards then the rest of the band showing there authority i might bring in some props e.g. guitar. The representation will be gender and i will do this by having a female on one cover and a male on the other.

How will these representations attract your audience?-
These representations will attract the audience because the target audience will be able to see that there is a rock band on the front of the cover and they might want to read about the new rock band.

Intertextuality in magazine?-
intertextuality will be used in my magazine because i would steal ideas for the photo off of other magazines and rock artists e.g. Kate bush, Guns and Roses.

How will it be appropriate for genre/audience?-
It will be appropriate for the target audience and genre because on the front cover the people will be wearing leather jackets and will have props that are connected to rock bands. The text used will be appropriate for the wire because it will be linking to the photo and will only talk about things about rock or will be linked into things about the rock genre this is because the target audience will be expecting to read about rock.

Product 2 website:

what media language are you going to use?
The media language i will be using is things such as mise-en-scene, colour schemes, camera shots. To make sure that it all fits into the genre of rock so i will be using the correct camera angles and lighting.

what design choices are going to attract your audience?
Iam going to design my website with dark colours e.g. red and blacks, I'm going to put my writing in bold writing and make it look loud e.g. sharp writing. By doing this people will be able to recognize my website as a rock genre and will want to know what is on the website and will be interested to find out what it is.

what pages will be included in my website?
In my website i will have a home page that will describes what the website is about and have the newly published magazine as well, there will also be links to the other pages which will be the policy's, older magazine with the date it was released, there will also be a shop were you can order the magazines online, it will also be linked to a social media page to help promote the business more.

Website structure?
The website structure will be a simple layout and will be able to be accessed easily, the people using the website will be able to go from one page to another with just one click. It will include information about the website and a email/phone number to contact if they are having any troubles. It will have all the new magazines on the website and the older magazines, there will also be an option to order the magazine through the website.

how will the website reflect the publisher?
on my website the publishers name will be mentioned and they will be given credit for the work they have done and then other company's can use the publisher if they wanted to.

what visual elements will hook the audience?
the visual elements that the website will include is pictures of new magazines and pictures of past magazines, it will also include photos from the people who ha helped create the magazine.

  1) The sub-genre iam going for is Indie rock (kate bush, artic monkeys E.C.T.)
The name for my magazine will be Rock breeze

2) The values that my magazine will stand for is independence, this will be represented by having one person on the front cover showing the independence. The content inside of the magazine will consist of a picture of the artist on one of the pages and the other page will have context on the artists and some of there song names on it. This will appeal to the target audience because it will be a new young rock artist aiming at the young teenagers who listen to rock and will will be targeted at the older audience because it will be nostalgic to them.

3)

4)  Article ideas-
  • A band break up, talking about a rock band who have recently split up and why.
  • New released song and a small portion of the lyrics to get the audience excited.
  • A collaboration between bands, the article will mention a collaboration between a known and an unknown artist.
  • Artists who are going on tour, mentioning tour dates and where.
  •  Album reviews, review on the artists new album with honest reviews
  • Inderpendent music (music from an unknown band)
  • Festivals, where the festival is with time and dates.

    Celebrities (Gossip on whats happening)

6)

7) In the background of the photo i would like it to be dark and some lights shinning up onto the person on the front cover making them stand out more then the background itself. I would like the model to either be wearing a black tank top and some back jeans or i would like them to wear a white/orange crop top with black/blue jeans or flares. I would like the model to be holding a guitar and to be looking at it like they are about to play it. I want the style of the models clothes and the photo to look indie rock so its not all rock and has a little bit more softer touch to it.

1) The website am making will be pale/ dark colours to add to the indie rock vibe, it will include photos of concerts and bands that i have attended to this will show what its like to be able to go to a concert influencing the people watching it to want to go to a concert. The context will be similar to the context thats inside of the magazine and will talk about potentially new big artists, it will show the new issues of the magazine that you could buy. The website will also have a bio explaining what we are and what we sell.

Magazine cover photo ideas:

Initial research

 Friday 26th April 2024.

Mojo is a British magazine that publishes music magazines regularly, the picture on the left is an example of one of the magazines they have published recently.

By the picture we are able to tell that Radiohead is a rock band, this is because of the colours they have used in the photo are darkish grey colours.

This magazine is quite a simple design and doesn't have much context written on the front and the main focus of this magazine is the photo taken as it is one of the first thing people look at.

This is another example of a mojo magazine it is also a british rock singer but she is a solo singer, with the pose and the clothes she is wearing people who dont know her will be able to see she is a rock singer because of the stereotypical leather jacket that rock singers wear. This magazine has more context on the front of the magazine compared to the Radiohead magazine.

Huck is a smaller more inderpendent brand then MOJO and many other big magazines publishers, huck publishes many different genres of music videos. The magazine cover that i have picked from the many choices is one of there rock magazine covers. Hucks magazine covers are always very mimalist keeping it simple and not complicated. On the front cover they have used a well known name and face so people will be interested to see what is being said inside the magazine. The publishers have put everything important on the front cover of the front cover e.g. barcode, names e.c.t. The cover photo is just a picture of liam gallager and the lighting of the photo is quite dim. I dont think it is that obvious that it is a rock magazine and i think people will only know if they know Liam Gallagher.
The publisher/founder of Huck is TCO London, hucks websites are easy to understand and they run smoothly, TCO London also has a link that can be pressed that will take the person to Huck magazine.

The wire is another independent magazine publisher they also publish rock magazine covers. The wire have much more on the cover of there magazine then Huck does, they tell you what will be inside of there magazine so the buyers can know if its something that they will enjoy to read or not.  There socials are very simple and easy to control and find things, they put there magazines in year coloums, they also sort it by newest to latest so its easier for there customers to find what they are looking for. I would say that this magazine cover makes it obvious that it is a rock band this is because the stance they have as well as the clothing they are wearing.
This is a photo of there years you can press to find the magazines. This makes it easier for people to find what they looking for and what year it was released.

Friday 10th May 2024.

Style/design- Bold cover lines, includes a CD inside, repetitive colour scheme, layout professionally.

Quality of image- Expensive equipment, expensive photoshoot, done professionally, expensive software.

Price and regularity- £64.99 for 12 issues

No. of pages- 131 pages in total

Glossy/Matt- Glossy (more expensive as it lasts longer and gives it a better look)

CGI/Special effects- they have made the background whiter and blacked out kate bush making her look more like a silhouette so she stands out more.

Cinematic style/Documentary style- Cinematic

Clothing, hair- leather jacket, black clothes, curled/blowout hair style, dark make-up (so it stands out more in black and white)

Positioning- she has been placed in the middle of the cover page so she is the first thing that you will see she is also standing turning sideways and facing the camera (direct address) her body language makes her look layed back.

Setting/background- plane white background

Props- no props used

Fonts- a range of different fonts used one most used though is the sans seriff font.

Colours- black, gold, white, red

Language- written about the new album, quote from Kate bush, other artists/bands.

Ideology- they have made the magazine to make her fans feel closer to her and more involved, it helps her fans know things such as an insight of a new album or the free CD inside the magazine.

This magazine website has a unique layout,  this is because on the opening page they have one of there newest released magazine with a description next to it, they have used more of a modern look on their designs. The colours they have used for the magazine cover stands out against the white background and draws in the attention of there viewers and the audience. They have quick and easy ways of finding what they are looking for by clicking the button e.g. "in writing", or "about" they also have button were you can watch a video on the magazine if they don't want to read it. They have included a search bar if the viewer isn't able to find what they are looking for on the main page. They have the name of the magazine in the top left corner using a sans seriff font making it stand out more from the rest of the writing. The way they have layed this out makes it easier to find stuff and look through the website  and easier for there viewers to find what they are looking for. We are able to see that they targeted audience is rock this is because the magazine they have out on the front page shows a rock band, i can tell this because of the spiked up hair the bold colours the droopy faces behind the guy and the way they have written "shellac" the writing is in a sans seriff font and they have made the word look loud. They have included all the information that you ,may need and have made it easier for there viewers to find magazines, videos e.c.t. they have produced there website well and have made it easy to figure things out.

This magazine cover isn't as informal as the other magazine. When the viewers look at the main page there attention is more likely to be drawn to the name of the magazines, this is because they have used a slab seriff font and make it look 3D different to the other brands websites it makes it stand out more. They have links at the top that will take you to what you are looking for making it quicker then there viewer searching for ages. we can also see that they are trying to sell the newer magazine as soon as you click onto the website it has a click to cart button and the price you would be paying to get it. the main colours they have used here is red and black, red has the meaning of love but also death and black is associated with hate, by seeing this we are able to see that the website is aimed at people who like rock music this is also shown because of the name.
